#PositivelyStressed – Week 17

When I moved into my wife’s apartment 6 years ago, it was lined with trees of all sizes. They provided 2+ stories of privacy to the yard and driveway like a living, breathing barrier between us and the outside world.

But this week, the landlord took down the last of the trees – a huge oak.

I have to admit, it was unsettling. Hearing the continual *thud* of each section being cut down and impacting the Earth wasn’t just noise – it was a visceral reminder of what was being lost. And now, with the yard left bare, the absence feels louder than the chainsaws did.

Sabaton captured this feeling of unease during change in “Shiroyama” with:

“It’s the nature of time that the old ways must give in / … / The dawn of destiny draws near.”

Change is inevitable. But our response – that is a choice.

For some, change can be exciting – for others it is anxiety-filled. Whether it is a new job, a new Pope, a birthday, or just a newly emptied yard. These transitions bring stress – but they also bring opportunity.

But that is the beauty of change-based stresses – we can look at it from another perspective.

This is the essence of #PositivelyStressed.

When we shift our perspective on stress and mental health into a positive outlook, then stress and mental health issues don’t look as insurmountable as they did previously.

Rather, stress becomes something we grow through – not just go through.
