#Positively Stressed - Week 19
So it took me a little more than a week to get back to this… as you can imagine, there was some stress involved.
Between two jury trials and a few other events at work over the last month, I decided to take most of the week off after Memorial Day. Ironically, I ended up with less free time than if I’d been working. Ballet recitals, birthdays, spring cleaning – sometimes life outside of work is its own full-time job.
How we handle these constant demands says quite a bit about us. Whether through therapy, martial arts, or mentorship, we all need systems in our lives to help us respond to pressure – not just react to it. These systems teach us principles, not instructional guides.
For example, maybe you are invited to yet another event that you’re not sure whether you have the bandwidth for – your neighbor’s granddaughter’s college roommate’s cousin’s birthday – and mutual friends are attending, so now it feels mandatory.
Fans of the “Karate Kid”/ “Cobra Kai” series know different styles teach different strategies. Miyagi-Do teaches restraint and would guide you to express your boundaries directly. Eagle Fang teaches assertiveness and action which might guide you to throw a cooler party across the street. Different styles, same goal: learn how to stand your ground under pressure.
The real key? Be open to learning multiple styles. The broader your perspective, the better equipped you are to handle any situation you will come across – whether it’s a jury trial, a ballet recital, or a birthday you didn’t see coming.
